On yesterday, during yet another session in the House of Representatives, they approved a bill to fund the FDA. But it was their speeches that were amazing as well as astounding! Seems the Tea Party Republicans, (very new to governance), were upset once the press alerted the public to the FDA shutdown as well. Duh? But here’s why: http://www.wired.com/wiredscience/2013/10/shutdown-salmonella/ Seems that they are just now learning what a shutdown really means, and are blaming President Obama for the closure of the FDA. Double duh. Their speeches were singing the praises of the FDA, the very same FDA that they voted to shut down via the ‘yay’ votes to shut down the government. They expressed the same outrage over the closure of the WWII memorial to the point that one of those House Republicans publicly chastised a park ranger for having the memorial closed and told her she should be ashamed! The park ranger replied that she was not ashamed. Take a look: http://www.cnn.com/video/data/2.0/video/bestoftv/2013/10/04/ac-bash-shutdown-day-three.cnn.html In fact, she was there on an unpaid basis. In reality, it is he who should be ashamed. She, like the rest of us, did not get a vote. He did, and that vote encompassed all of the federal government, not just some of it. Thank goodness for the man who reminded him that it was his fault.
Now the House Republicans want to ‘cherry pick’ those portions of the government that should be re-opened. They should not be allowed to do that. The American public does not need to finance or witness their civics learning process. The Tea Party Republicans came to Congress with a single-minded purpose. To stop Obamacare, (Affordable Healthcare Act), or to thwart it in any way that they could, even if it meant shutting down the government. (The shutdown plans predate some of their arrivals to Congress.)
The Senate should take an all or nothing approach, and refuse to allow the cherry picking. Yes, the Tea Party House members now know just how wrong they were, and they are paying for their new learning process. But America is not a ‘piecemeal’ country, and there should be no piecemeal funding.
Right now, the United States of America is ‘closed’ and Congress should re-open all of America. To House Republicans: Open all of America or none of it.
