It seems as if everyone was willing to give the NRA a chance to respond like normal people after the events at Newtown’s Sandy Hook Elementary School. But, they did not.  Instead, they called for even more guns!

Even their members were moving in the opposite direction of the NRA.  But, even though most people in their membership were on board for some changes, not so the leadership.  So, maybe it is time that everyone, (including their members), start viewing the NRA as what they really seem to be.  Lobbyist for gun manufacturers.  So of course, the gun manufacturers want more guns, despite the fact that in almost every instance, there were armed people around during shootings of this sort, that is except for Sandy Hook.   And, the fact is that it made no difference at all.

The Senate is preparing a bill that will be designed to prohibit the sale of guns with the multi-bullet clip capacity and also re-instituting the automatic weapon ban that was in effect during the Clinton years, but signed away by the second President Bush.   That seems to be a good idea.  Years ago, Chris Rock had an idea: “put a huge tax on the bullets”.  That too, seems to be a good idea.

Remember the guy who was shooting at Fort Hood?  How many guns were on that base, and still, the guy was able to find a way to get around it.  Clearly, more guns are not the answer.  The NRA had an opportunity to work with the country. If they did not have something meaningful to contribute, then they should have remained silent … forever.  Now, they are having to deal with their membership falling apart, wondering if being a member means anything at all.  Especially those hunters who spoke up saying they did not need that sort of weaponry for hunting purposes.  Those members are starting to figure out that they are pawns who mean nothing to the NRA, because their dues cannot match the financial contributions of the gun manufacturers.  When enough of them recognize their true lack of importance to the NRA,  maybe the NRA will wake up and realize that their point of view is no longer valued … by anyone.  By then, though, the NRA’s influence will have vanished into thin air.

OPINION: IT’S TIME FOR NRA TO STAND DOWN

The events of this day bring to mind too many other days just like this.  This, however, was different. This time, in Newton, Connecticut, it was little children, who never had a chance.  For even after being shot, their chances of survival were nil.  Yes, the conversation always turns to some sort of gun control, and, predictably, the NRA and its supporters come up with the usual clichés and rationalizations.  One is always, ‘guns don’t kill people, people kill people‘.  True, but the trigger still gets pulled, and the people are still dead.  Then of course the say, ‘well if the other person had had a gun…’.  Really?  The six-year-old?  Try looking in the face of the parents of these little ones while  speaking those talking points.

This time, the NRA needs to stand down.  Because the truth is, the 2nd Amendment to the Constitution does not really mean the right of every single citizen to bear arms, but for the country to have an armed militia.  Back then, ordinary citizens were part of that militia, but today, the well-armed militia is the United States military!   Sure, people want to protect themselves.  Fine.  Sure, people want to go hunting.  But if a rabbit  got shot with an automatic weapon, or an AK47, there would be no meat left for a hunter to eat.   This time, the NRA should come to the table and engage and come up with suggestions, because enough is enough.  Other countries have gun control, and look at America aghast.  They ask: ‘What is wrong with America?’  or, ‘What is wrong with the American people?’  What is wrong is this: America allows its politicians to be fed money by lobbyist working for the NRA, and, thereby precluding any sort of legislation.   This time Congress should stand up and tell the NRA to stand down.

Motor vehicles are required to be registered every year, and, when one is sold, there are all sorts of regulations that must be obeyed.   But, the paranoid-conspiracy-theorists-NRA lets out a yell:  ‘they’re coming to get our guns!’, and everyone backs down.   It must be made clear that no one wants to take away guns from anyone, but the issue is access to guns.  In this instance, the guns were purchased legally, but they should not have been in a home with a mentally disturbed individual.  That should be one of the questions: ‘Is anyone in your home mentally unstable?’   The mother of the shooter was shot with her own gun, by her own son, in her own home.  Maybe if she had been required to answer those sorts of questions every year, she, and all of those children, just might be alive.

The NRA has to come to the table and help the country hammer this out, because today we lost more of our precious treasure.  Our innocent little children.
