Many have called the press release regarding the emails found on the laptop belonging to Anthony Weiner by lifelong Republican FBI director Comey a political and partisan act. But is it really? Could it be that in his world, a woman as president of the United States is unfathomable? His boss, Loretta Lynch, Attorney General for the United States advised that pursuant to Justice Department protocol, such a release would be a violation of that protocol in that it was too close to a national election. Comey did it anyway. Would he have done it anyway had his boss been a man? He had no obligation to inform Congress of anything, especially something he had not seen. Most also recognize that those emails could indeed be duplicates. Did he care? Worried about what might be said after the election is not sufficient grounds for his actions. And worrying about leaks from his own department is insufficient as well. Leaks would not have had the same impact as a letter signed by him, sent directly to Republican members of Congress and only cc’d to Democrats. (The ranking member of the Congressional committee learned of the letter via tweet.) He had no obligation to notify Congress of anything, unless it was substantial. He also neglected to say that the emails belonged to someone else entirely. All of his excuses fall very short of being legitimate and point towards a ‘traditional’ attitude by some conservatives – women are not equal to men when it comes to the office of the presidency.
Then again today, the FBI, making it clear whom they favor in this election, released data regarding someone who Bill Clinton pardoned at the end of his presidency. Apparently hoping that this additional information would sway the election. Seriously? Bombarding the public with ancient history? This is even more sexist in that the attempt to make her husband’s record her own making it apparent that a woman must belong to a man, even his record. Apparently they could find nothing else, so they dug up something about Bill. Would this happen to a man who is a presidential candidate? Yes, the press looked into Melania Trump and her immigration status, but only because it related to his hypocritical stance on immigration. But men are allowed to have their own record, their own flaws, but are not tied to the record of their wives.
Yet, Comey has refused to release anything regarding the investigations and inquiries relative to Donald J. Trump and the Russia connection. So the cries of partisanship abound in political circles, with no one daring to say the obvious. That the possibility exists that Comey is one of those anti-woman persons who feel that a woman’s place is in the home, and that the world should be run by men. Look at the disdain on his face. What was that about? And why a press conference? Because he wanted to do damage.
Even his unprecedented press conference earlier this year proved to be indicative of gender-bias. Watching it again, he cleared her of criminal wrongdoing, but, not without throwing stones at her for her handling of information. He was dismissive of her, as sexist men usually are towards women. As if to say, without saying it, she’s a woman, so she made mistakes. He admitted that she had done nothing criminal, but could not resist tearing her down with unsubstantiated and speculative comments. Usually, the FBI issues a press release advising that no charges will be filed.
So it just well may be that it was not partisan, but rather a sexist action, trying to save America from having a woman president. Something to think about when you cast your vote – and when you factor in all of this recent news, consider not only the source, but the rationale.
