OPINION: IT’S TIME FOR NRA TO STAND DOWN

The events of this day bring to mind too many other days just like this.  This, however, was different. This time, in Newton, Connecticut, it was little children, who never had a chance.  For even after being shot, their chances of survival were nil.  Yes, the conversation always turns to some sort of gun control, and, predictably, the NRA and its supporters come up with the usual clichés and rationalizations.  One is always, ‘guns don’t kill people, people kill people‘.  True, but the trigger still gets pulled, and the people are still dead.  Then of course the say, ‘well if the other person had had a gun…’.  Really?  The six-year-old?  Try looking in the face of the parents of these little ones while  speaking those talking points.

This time, the NRA needs to stand down.  Because the truth is, the 2nd Amendment to the Constitution does not really mean the right of every single citizen to bear arms, but for the country to have an armed militia.  Back then, ordinary citizens were part of that militia, but today, the well-armed militia is the United States military!   Sure, people want to protect themselves.  Fine.  Sure, people want to go hunting.  But if a rabbit  got shot with an automatic weapon, or an AK47, there would be no meat left for a hunter to eat.   This time, the NRA should come to the table and engage and come up with suggestions, because enough is enough.  Other countries have gun control, and look at America aghast.  They ask: ‘What is wrong with America?’  or, ‘What is wrong with the American people?’  What is wrong is this: America allows its politicians to be fed money by lobbyist working for the NRA, and, thereby precluding any sort of legislation.   This time Congress should stand up and tell the NRA to stand down.

Motor vehicles are required to be registered every year, and, when one is sold, there are all sorts of regulations that must be obeyed.   But, the paranoid-conspiracy-theorists-NRA lets out a yell:  ‘they’re coming to get our guns!’, and everyone backs down.   It must be made clear that no one wants to take away guns from anyone, but the issue is access to guns.  In this instance, the guns were purchased legally, but they should not have been in a home with a mentally disturbed individual.  That should be one of the questions: ‘Is anyone in your home mentally unstable?’   The mother of the shooter was shot with her own gun, by her own son, in her own home.  Maybe if she had been required to answer those sorts of questions every year, she, and all of those children, just might be alive.

The NRA has to come to the table and help the country hammer this out, because today we lost more of our precious treasure.  Our innocent little children.
